It's not visible in this photo but in the villages of Crete and perhaps on the other islands you very often see one or several numbers crossed out on the walls of houses. There has never appeared to be any system to it, a house may have 101 crossed out and 421 in it's place whereas the houses either side of it have 4 different numbers...if any of this makes sense! It has been driving me nuts for years trying to make sense of it. Anyway, it would appear that these numbers refer to the electric meters which are usually sited on the front of the houses so every time that the electric meter is replaced it is given a unique number for you and this is daubed on the outside of the house. Obviously some people are a little more house proud than others and so paint out previous numbers whereas other don't seem to give a damn and just leave the old ones there crossed out.

If you have read all the way through that and give a damn then well done....I'm sure that someone asked me ages ago what it was all about and I didn't know then. So there you have it. Perhaps I should have put a warning at the begining that the next 10 lines may bore you rigid...thank you for bearing with me. Your prize will be a place in heaven.
