The dead seem to get a lot of attention in Crete. There is always a lot of fuss when someone dies..as it should be, but the whole village seems to be involved. Anouncement of the death and funeral is posted on telegraph posts, there is always a large turn out on the day, food is handed out. The posters always tell you who the spouse left is, names of children, grandchildren. Then periodically 6 months, a year the same happens again...posters up bells ring. I think that it is the huge sense of community that takes me back there again and again. They seem to have retained something that we lost many years ago.
